The Missing Unicorn

Luke was obsessed with animals. Every day at school, he couldn't wait for the animal lessons. He'd chatter about everything from aardvarks to zebras. Dinosaurs thrilled him as much as bunnies did. Lions, tigers, deer, and foxes—Luke loved them all.

But one day, he realized something strange. There was one animal missing from all his books, zoo visits, and school lessons: a unicorn!

"Why aren't unicorns in any books?" Luke wondered aloud.

His teacher, overhearing, chuckled. "Unicorns? Oh, they're just make-believe, Luke."

Luke's face fell. "But why? With so many amazing animals, why make up something as simple as a horse with a horn?"

His dad shrugged. "People just like to imagine things, buddy."

Luke wasn't convinced. If his dad didn't have answers, who did? He decided to solve the mystery himself.

During a visit to Grammy and Pop-Pop's farm, Luke interrogated the animals. "Do you know about unicorns?"

Pop-Pop laughed. "Unicorns, huh? Well, let's find out."

Together, they searched the internet for answers. Luke learned unicorns appeared in ancient Greek texts, Arthurian legends, and even in the Bible. But none of this explained why he couldn't find a real one.

Grammy tucked him in that night, disappointed. "Maybe unicorns really are just stories," he sighed.

"Luke? Are you awake?"

Luke's eyes shot open. Standing beside his bed was a unicorn, its fur gleaming white and a golden horn on its forehead.

"You've been looking for me," the unicorn said.

Luke gasped. "I thought you were pretend!"

The unicorn chuckled. "Not at all. We prefer to be left alone. People have hunted us for centuries."

"Why do you want to be alone?"

"It's our way. Some creatures enjoy solitude."

Luke nodded. "I understand."

"Good. Promise me you won't try to find us."

"I promise," Luke said earnestly.

"Thank you for caring," said the unicorn softly.

Luke kept his promise, never revealing the unicorn's secret. He knew where to find them but respected their need for peace. Even in old age, he remembered his promise, keeping the unicorns safe in their secret haven.
